Finding Life’s Treasure - (PowerHouseCreatives Contest)
Mary and I have been together now for six months. I’ll sleep at her place sometimes and she’ll sleep at my place sometimes. Sometimes we’ll sleep apart, at our own places. I know things are heading toward a more serious relationship though, because the times we do sleep together are increasing in frequency.
I had actually first met Mary while I was enjoying a dinner date with my then girlfriend, Sarah.
That waitress’ name was Mary, and she was unknown to me at the time. The only thing I knew was that I was attracted to her so strongly, that I knew my relationship with Sarah wasn’t ever going to work. Sarah and I split up not long after that, as I still couldn’t get my mind off the waitress. I started going to the Pearl alone, sitting at the bar just trying to get a glimpse of her.
One of the strangest trinkets sent to me was a key. It looked like the kind of key that women’s jewelry boxes have. There was a little handwritten tag on it that said, “This key will unlock the treasure we both desire.” I started thinking that it must be Sarah sending these things, attempting to reignite our relationship.
One evening while sitting at the bar, my eyes met Mary’s for the first time since the dinner date with Sarah. Mary quickly looked away but then our eyes met again, and this time she smiled. Later that night at home, I decided to write a poem that I’d get to her somehow, during my next visit to the Pearl. It went like this:
For the first time and for what it’s worth
I saw an angel from afar
I was just clay but she was a star
Would she grace me with her glow?
Her answer, I’m just dying to know.
I have a friend who is very good with calligraphy, and I had him write the poem on a nice piece of paper that had tiny little stars on it, and my phone number. I rolled it up like a scroll and tied a red ribbon around it. I decided the best way to do it would be to give it to her just as I’d be leaving. I thought my handing off of the little scroll to Mary turned out to be a little dorky, especially when she laughed and asked, “What is this? You’re giving me a scroll?”
She had it in her hand though, so I just headed out while telling her to look at it later, after work. I was hoping my poem would work like a powerful love spell. I had always believed in magic since I was a small child, and I never lost my belief that magic is real. I went home and waited, nervously.
The response that I got from Mary proved to me that magic is definitely real. As I answered the ringing phone, I heard a sobbing Mary tell me, “This is the most beautiful thing that anyone’s ever given me, and this star is glowing right now, and wants to glow over you.” It seemed the magic worked, just as I’d wanted. I’d just never had it work for me so demonstratively before.
We talked on the phone for a while, and then I asked her if she’d like to take in a late movie. She said, “That might be nice.” She gave me her address, and told me her full name to give to the gate guard, as to whom I would be visiting. I told her I’d be by to pick her up in about twenty minutes. Her condo was pretty upscale for someone working a waitressing job, even though it is a 5 star restaurant.
She kissed me as though I was her long-lost lover she’d been craving to be with for so long she couldn’t control herself now that he was there. It wasn’t long until her robe was on the floor. Later, lying in her bed together, she asked me if I brought my key. I didn’t know what she meant, so I asked, “My car key? Yes I have it,” to which she replied, “No silly, the key to my heart - that I sent to you weeks ago.”

Wow! A great love story @free-reign. I felt you had actually lived some of this romance. 😊
Thanks @redheadpei! There is a one key part of the story related to my own experience. :)
It is a good sign that a relationship is not working when a person can't stop thinking about someone else. The key to her heart was cute.
Yep, when that happens there's no use in trying to hold onto a relationship that really has no chance. Thanks for reading and for your comment!
