Life Can Be Funny Sometimes
Sometimes life is funny and things are not what they look like. Last year it was a good year for agriculture in general in our region. There were some damages caused by too much rain but I can't really complain. We had a lot of walnuts, which is good but it's too much and something needed to be done so I went to the farmers market to find out what's the average price of walnuts.
It was early November I think and in the afternoon, when not many people are shopping. As I entered the market, went straight to the first vendor and asked about the price. The woman told me a high price, way to high, so I said thank you and walked away. She ran after me asking me what's the price I'm willing to pay? I said thank you, I'm not interested in buying and went to the next vendor to ask about the price. She told me almost the same price, I said thank you and went to the next vendor.
If you're not familiar with farmers market, you might end up paying double of what you should have. So you should know that prices are high in the morning and lower in the afternoon, however, this was not the case with walnuts as being a good year, everyone has a lot of walnuts and wants to sell it quickly at the highest price. These vendors tried to sell me at the highest price because it was at the beginning of the season.
By the time I got to the next vendor, I guess the whole market knew I'm asking for walnut prices, so this woman showed me her walnuts and told me the price without me asking. She was very friendly, showed me two types, one white and one brown, which was cheaper and asked me what I need the walnuts for. I told her I'm not here to buy, just interested in the price as we have some and want to sell it. She asked me if it's good quality and if it's white. I told her it's the best quality, which is true.
She told me something's happened to their walnut tree which has always given good quality walnuts, white, easy to crack and this year the nuts were dark brown and the nutshells were so hard to crack. She put the blame on the construction workers in front of the yard, she thought they might accidentally cut the roots of the tree and maybe that's what caused the damage, the change.
At this point I started smiling as I knew exactly what the problem was and this was where the fun began. Now imagine me, (dyed hair, sunglasses, nail polish etc.) explaining to an old woman from the countryside (who most likely lived her whole life at the county side, taking care of her family homestead), what to do to avoid getting hard nutshells.
You take a chain saw and cut two or three vertical lined into the three's trunk, make sure it's not deep, just to penetrate the hard part. This way instead of hardening the nutshells, the tree will use that glue material to heal the wounds and the nutshells will be more thin and fragile. Before you think I'm some kind of expert, I'm telling you I'm not. I just happen to know these things because my dad does that each year and I saw the results.
Back to the story, the old woman was listening to me with her jaw dropped, she's never heard of this method but was clearly interested. I told her she can trust me because my dad does this for years and the results are great. Finally she thanked me for the information and told me she'd never thought she could learn something from city living people, no offense 😁 Non taken! We both laughed at the end and I was happy I could help. I'm going to ask her next time if they did the cutting, let's see if she could convince the men in her household to do it.

Dyed hair, sunglasses and nail polish. You sound like high maintenance and obviously they saw you coming by inflating the prices.First I have heard this story, but makes perfect sense. The only walnuts I buy are for the parrots. I have to jump on them to crack them and even then it doesn't work. They make good weapons though and haven't eaten one for years.
😮 so I'm the one to blame for the inflated prices 😁
Looks like you need a hammer for those nuts or a big rock.
Yep. If you wandered around in some gardening clothes and no make up maybe they would take pity on you and the prices would drop. A hammer could be dangerous , if you don't hit it flush it could fly through and break a window or something. Those nuts are dangerous.
Next time I'm going to wear my gardening clothes, I swear.
Thank you?
