How Important Is Privacy?
Privacy is another popular word today, you can't escape it, no matter where you go, no matter what you do, there is always something, a webpage or a sign that reminds you of the existence of it, which is a good thing because privacy is important.
However some people don't understand the meaning of the word, the importance of it or they just don't care or care more about other people's life. For them poking their nose in other people's life is more exciting.
A few years ago a relative of mine who lives in another city asked me to help out with some medical issues. I had to go to a local medical clinic and contact a doctor, pick up some blood tests and some prescriptions. The specialist knew about it and was expecting me.
After picking up the blood tests I sat down in the waiting room, which was empty at the time I arrived. After a few minutes an older woman came in and set down right next to me. I had a strange feeling about what is going to happen because unfortunately I have experience in going to the doctor and waiting for hours to get in and could see what is going to happen.
After the woman set down she started to complain about the weather, which was fine actually, sunny and warm but what better subject to start a conversation than the weather, right? I said nothing, set there in silence, hoping she would finish her monologue but she didn't. She asked me why I was there. I took a deep breath and told her I was there to pick up some blood tests and some prescriptions for someone, hoping she would stop. I was wrong. She asked me if she could look at the blood tests I was holding in my hand.
Unfortunately these things happen very often especially with older people with less education. They think having a conversation is polite and they don't realize this is not polite any more but rude. I've seen many things but this was the worst by far. Unbelievable!
I took a deep breath (always do in situations like this) and told her "NO!", she can't look at the tests because it's none of her business, plus she wouldn't understand a thing unless she's a doctor. She wasn't expecting such a reply, my words shocked her, she mumbled something like she wanted to be friendly and said she was sorry. I told her poking her nose in other people's business is not friendly, nor polite. Lucky me, the door opened and I was called in.
After that I had to go to the bank to take care of some business and at that hour there were a few people in line in front of me so I was staying in line, waiting patiently, respecting the distance so people in front of me can have privacy.
There was one person in front of me, I should have been next, when an older man stormed in and got in line right in front of me. I took a deep breath (again) and told him the end of the line is behind me. He obviously thought age matters in these cases because he said I shouldn't lecture older people. Attack is the best defense, right? I was lucky in this case because the clerk stepped in and told him to stay in line and keep his voice down.
Sometimes I'm wondering if these people would ever learn what privacy is. There's a long way to go, people have a lot to learn and I guess some would never learn.
