Conversations With Katie, The Girl That Cuts My Hair - December 2018
My appointment with Katie was 9:30 am. I brought her some of the persimmons that I picked from my friend's farm. I remember I brought her some persimmons last year, so I thought I would bring some this year too.
Before the haircut I wanted to take a picture of her station like I usually do. I mentioned to Katie that last time she had a partial reflection of her face in the mirror. She seen that, but that was OK, since it didn't have her whole face.
So this time I wanted to make sure there was no reflection in the mirror at all. Katie would rather not have her picture in the blog.
So some how we started to talk about concert in the park. I have never gone to a concert in the park before. Katie mentioned that it takes place in the summer time.
I can't remember what park it is in, but I guess I can look it up in the internet. I don't listen to music much these days though. Sometimes I listen to praise and worship music. I mostly listen to the audio Bible.
Then she mentioned that mostly people that go there are of the older crowd. I would tell her that reminds me of when I was younger and my parents would always watch The Lawrence Welk Show, it was a TV show that ran from the 50's to early 80's and I think they even have their reruns running to the present.
I thought it was an OK show but I think I would have rather listened to the radio for music in those days. Now that even reminds me of my transistor radio that I would always listen to.
Now I didn't talk to Katie about my transistor radio so let's get back to our conversation.
I did tell Katie that one of my friends, who was older than me wanted to take me to the place that she normally goes dancing at. I really didn't want to go, but she just kept on asking me.
So I finally went. They were playing the old music that I wasn't used to. I'm already old and knew songs from the 60's as a kid, but they were doing songs mostly from the 50's and earlier. I kind of felt out of place there.
Then some how we were talking about a guy with a really big tree, that he needed to cut down. Well, to cut down that tree professionally, it would cost $2000.
Now you would want to cut down a tree professionally cause I have seen people on Youtube cut down really big trees and they made a mistake and the tree fell on the house. Can you imagine the damage a big falling tree can do?
At least if it was done professionally, they should/would have insurance to pay for that damage if they did it wrong.
Well anyway, Katie tells me a furniture maker offers him money for the wood of the tree that he was going to cut down anyway.
Well, I guess they cut down the tree the way the furniture maker wanted. The furniture maker bought the wood for $2100. So the home owner actually made a profit from cutting down his tree of $100.
Well that is good cause I did have my front trees trimmed some time ago when the big winds came and cracked some of the branches from my Modesto Ash tree.
It was too dangerous, since those cracked branches my fall on a car or someone, so I did trim both of my trees, the Modesto Ash and Magnolia tree in the front. I think it cost me $550. I think the same job now days would be a lot more.
Katie and I also talked about chopping wood. Well, she doesn't chop wood, but her boyfriend does. I told her I use the old fashioned maul. A maul kind of looks like an over sized ax. The maul is especially made to split wood.
We talked of other ways to split wood, but they would cost some money. I heard of people buying wood splitters for $1000. That is too much for me, so I just do it the old fashioned way. The way they been doing it for thousands of years.
Then we talked of someone she knows that has a budget to buy a used car for $2000. I told Katie that I always buy used cars.
I usually look at the Craigslist ads looking for cars in my budget that say words like, "runs perfectly" or something like that.
I figured even if they lie about some of the things that it is mostly good. Then I always have extra money to fix it up. Well, I always fix up a car that I just bought.
To me it is a given. I figure if I am going to buy a car for $2000 then I better have an extra $1000 just to fix things like the brakes or clutch or whatever.
Katie mentioned that she only buys Toyota. The only Japanese vehicles I have owned were Nissan and Honda. I told her that since she has a Toyota that if she needs a motor she can always buy a used Japanese Toyota motor.
One thing about those Japanese motors is that they usually only have about 40,000 miles on them. So to me those motors are almost as good as new. A lot cheaper than putting in a new motor.
Then my haircut was coming to an end. Sometimes I wouldn't mind if the haircut lasted longer so we can continue our conversation, but all good things come to an end.
I am always happy with the haircut that Katie gives me. I pay her and we give each other a hug.
