Characters that have changed the course of history. Wiliam Morton
Dear friends of Steemit and of this community
A life without pain, the eternal search of man, here is the life of an extraordinary personage.
WILIAM MORTON
For all of us the simple fact of having a cut on the skin is already painful, imagine a dental extraction or much further, an amputation and that all this is done without anesthesia.
For all of us the simple fact of having a cut on the skin is already painful, imagine a dental extraction or much further, an amputation and that all this is done without anesthesia.
There are people who care about human suffering and seek to provide solutions, this character of today, was one of them and his invention changed the pain, for peace and confidence.
William Thomas Green Morton, born in Charlton, Massachusetts, on August 9, 1819, a dentist by profession, is the creator of what we know as anesthesia, without which modern life would be hell.
On October 16, 1846, this man demonstrated that using inhaled ether it was possible to perform surgery without pain.
Before him there were many attempts to create a system to avoid suffering in surgical interventions, including another dentist, Morton's partner and professor named Horace Wells, had successfully tested the gas known as laughing gas or laughing gas.
Morton made a simple machine for anesthesia that consisted of a glass balloon with a sponge moistened in ether and that when aspirated caused immediate drowsiness.
Despite being considered the father of anesthesia, Morton tried to hide the formula, but was sued and had to give it publicly, this led him to not enjoy the patent, subsequently leading a dark life and dying in New York on July 15, 1868, due to a cerebrovascular accident.
Curiously, his professor and partner Horace Wells, the other one who shared with Morton the historical invention, frustrated and depressed for having been deprived of the honor, (he had used nitrogen oxide in his tests) became addicted to ether and at one point he cut his veins, after having used this gas to avoid suffering, and died on February 30, 1848 in New York.
Finally, although Morton is considered the father of anesthesia, we must also recognize the effort of Horace Wells to leave to posterity his effort for a world without pain.
